Comparing the Role of the Noble Lie in the Iliad and the...
The Role of the Noble Lie in the Iliad and the Republic Lie ââ¬â 2 : something that misleads or deceives Noble ââ¬â 5 : possessing, characterized by, or arising from superiority of mind or character or of ideals or morals (Merriam-Webster Dictionary) The very thought of a noble lie is contradictory, yet Plato uses it as the basis for stability within his perfect republic. The concept that a lie so deeply ingrained in society will allow it to remain peaceful is generally thought to be unique to Plato. This is because Platoââ¬â¢s idea of the noble lie is one that is at the very root of society ââ¬â one that is accepted as a truth. What makes Platoââ¬â¢s Noble Lie such a hallmark of knowledge is that it has never been tested,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Conversely, when a soldier is filled with angst and attempts to strike down a more powerful being ââ¬â an immortal ââ¬â or when an immortal influences a mortal by asserting his or her power, war breaks out. Achilles, in Book I, proclaims, ââ¬Å"Remind [Zeus] of that, now, go and sit beside him, grasp his knees . . . persuade him, somehow, to help the Trojan cause, to pin the Achaeans back against their ship, trap them round the bay and mow them downâ⬠(484-488). If Achilles had not believed that immortals were more powerful, he would not have attempted to directly influence his mother Thetis ââ¬â a goddess. To preserve the integrity of the lie, Achilles couldnââ¬â¢t even exist. His existence is proof that the noble lie is untrue, as he as the offspring of a mortal and immortal, and possesses powers greater than the common mortal. If Achilles did not exist, the Iliad, a story about his wrath and anger, could not exist ââ¬â meaning there would be peace between the Achaeans and Trojans. However, the noble lie within the Iliad still remains; mortals and immortals should not interact. Because Achilles appeals to his mother, the war continues. Although the means to the ends may be different when comparing the the role of a noble lie in the Iliad and the Republic, the ends of the lie remains the same. Plato introduces the lie by writing: ââ¬Å"Could we,â⬠I said, ââ¬Å"somehow contrive one of those lies that come

Leased Line Free Essays
Leased Line:- A leased line is a private high-performance circuit leased by a common carrier between a customer and a service providerââ¬â¢s network. It is rented on an annual basis and usually carries voice and data or both. Leased lines are mostly used for either internet access (Internet Leased Line) or used privately between two customer sites (Point to Point Leased Line). We will write a custom essay sample on Leased Line or any similar topic only for you Order Now Unlike a dial-up connection, a leased line is always active. Similarly unlike broadband, a leased line is not contended or shared and delivers dedicated guaranteed bandwidth straight to the internet backbone. Customers pay a premium for a leased line and it is supported by a comprehensive Service-Level Agreement (SLA) with a guaranteed fix time and a compensation clause. Otherwise referred to as a point to point, private circuit, private line or dedicated access. Leased Line History: Leased lines services (or private line services) became digital in the 1970s with the conversion of the Bell backbone network from analog to digital circuits. This conversion allowed ATT to offer Dataphone Digital Services (later re-branded digital data services) that started the deployment of ISDN and T1 lines to customer premises to connect. With the extension of digital services in the 1980s leased lines were used to connect customer premises to Frame Relay or ATM networks. Access data rates increased from the original T1 option up to T3 circuits. Access data rates also evolved dramatically to speeds of up to 10Gbit/s in the early 21st century with the Internet boom and increased offering in long-haul optical networks or Metropolitan Area Networks. Frozen Foods Cause Obesity Children May Affect Health And Growth
Question: Discuss About The Frozen Foods Cause The Obesity In Children? Answer: Introducation In recent times the competition has increased in almost every field. In order to cement a standard position in any sector, it has become imperative for almost every individual to engage in schedules which are hectic and furious (Ganann et al. 2014). In order to meet busy schedules the individuals have to invest ample amount of time. Thus, it can be said that the concerns relating to health goes for a toss (Anderson and Butcher, 2016). Additionally, in order to cope with the growing competition, it has become essential for the individuals to invest in techniques and tricks that would save them ample time as well. Thus, it can be seen that the dependency on packaged and processed food has been increasing over the years (Biro and Wien, 2010). With lack of enough time and energy to invest on quality food made in home, more and more people are turning towards these alternatives. One of the major issues, however, that prevails is the fact that these processed foods, no matter how much convenience they might add to the routines of the individuals, are not barred from considerable issues that may have an impact on the health of the consumers (Cobb et al. 2015). In majority of the times, the frozen or processed foods are consisting of certain elements which may have dire consequences on the overall health of the consumers (Odoms-Young et al. 2014). The rising health related issues is one of the major indicators of the fact that the fast paced lifestyles of the individuals may impact the health of individuals (Bjrck et al. 2014). When it comes to children, the concern related to health becomes even more evident. The impact of things like processed foods are likely to be more on children since their immunity is low. It can be observed that the preferences of the children towards food items as such are far more than the conventional healthy food alternatives. The junk food consumption and frozen and processed food are even though heavily consumed by the children; the added health issues are likely to affect their overall condition (Dixon et al. 2014). Obesity is one of the most common health conditions which is being noted among the children in recent times (Cetateanu and Jones, 2014). While obesity itself is a serious health condition, it can also lead to many other health related issues among the sufferers, which may include blood pressure fluctuations, high diabetes, heart diseases to name a few. Thus, it cannot be denied that these fast and processed materials like frozen foods are unhealthy, especially for the children for consumption. Hence, this specific study has been undertaken to explain how frozen food can contribute in growing obesity among children and how it may impact their overall growth. Methodology In order to progress with any study and establish a conclusive result, it is important that standard methods are being followed and a structured format is maintained. Hence, in this research as well, it has been considered that suitable techniques are being followed to achieve concrete conclusions. While the chosen subject is one of the major concerns in recent times, it can be seen that various studies and articles have been developed over the years addressing the issues that may crop up due to the constant consumption of processed or frozen food. In order to derive a proper result, these sources have been utilized by the researcher. Hence, it can be said that the researcher has undertaken the secondary research method in order to progress with the study. The available literary sources addressing the eating habits among children and the impact of the diets which are being followed by them on their overall health conditions have been studied and analysed. Additionally, it has also been taken into consideration to trace whether frozen food is responsible for health dire health conditions like obesity among children or not. With the help of available documents, it will be easier to establish the facts and get a better knowledge regarding the situations relating to the chosen subject. The sources which have been incorporated for the study are from the time period of 2012-17. This is done in order to ensure that the relevance of the attained data is properly managed in current scenario. The research has been conducted as a netnography which is the internet form of ethnography. For this research 3 social media sites (Facebook, Twitter and Youtube) have been explored and the discussions have been based on the findings from these sites Literature Review Frozen food Foods which are processed at low temperatures in order to ensure that the shelf life of the same is enhanced and the spoilage of the food is eliminated are considered as frozen food (Martinez et al. 2015). While in recent times, the popularity of the frozen food have considerably increased due to the constant time constraints that most individuals may have to deal with, it can be seen that the process has been implemented and followed by individuals for long time now (Cole et al. 2012). The need of quick-fixes and convenience can be considered as one of the major contributors for the rise in demand of the frozen food among the working individuals or parents. The foods, vegetables and other items are picked up when the same can be essentially considered as ripe. The techniques are used in order to hinder the process of decomposition that these items are generally subjected to (Terry et al. 2016). The moisture that the items contain is turned into ice form in order to lock the process of spoilage. Thus, the products can be considered effective enough for further consumption for a long time (Howlett et al. 2016). The frozen food products can be considered as one of the methods that acts as a boon in the busy lives of many. The food items are preserved in cold spots and reduced temperatures that can be utilised only by un-packaging and heating it (Davis and Carpenter, 2012). Thus, it can be said that the foods as such are high on demand in recent times. However, one of the major concerns that has been debatable is whether these food sources are able to retain the nutritional value in a proper manner or not (Musaad et al. 2017). Additionally, the techniques which are used in recent times to preserve the food as such are also observed to be using certain enzymes which are responsible for enhancement of fat among consumers (Elliott, 2012). High amount of preservatives are used for storing the food items as such. The food which re stored at extreme low temperature ensures that the scopes of microorganism to grow on these items are eliminated (Fraser and Edwards, 2012). Thus, the deterioration of the food products are reduced. However, the scope of other forms of deterioration cannot be avoided altogether. It can be seen that most of the preservatives that are used for the frozen storage of foods are likely to have certain amount of disadvantages, especially on the health conditions of the consumers (Buss et al. 2014). Chemical reactions and oxidations are certain aspects which are responsible for the deterioration of the overall quality of the food items which are being stored in frozen state. The most widely used preservatives which are being utilised are sodium and saturated fats. It is a known fact that the saturated fats, sugar contents and sugars are responsible for the destruction of nutritious elements in food products (Larson and Story, 2013). Furthermore, these constituents tend to get stored in the body as unhealthy fat that may lead to conditions like obesity and other health problems (Gurnani et al. 2015). While the sodium is one of the major contents that is responsible for retention of liquid intake that makes individual feel bloated and stuffed, the high level of satura ted fats can also be considered harmful for regular consumption (Lau et al. 2014). The food habits of the children in recent times are getting more driven towards the fast and junk. Mostly, it can be seen that the working parents are not able to invest appropriate amount of time in the kitchen preparing food from fresh ingredients (Zenk et al. 2014). In addition to the consumption of foods as such, minimum physical exercises and added stress in their educational institutions are majorly responsible for the deteriorating health condition of the children (Lustig et al. 2016). Dangers that may affect growth of children When it comes to food consumption, the noticeable shift in the demands of the individuals can be observed. The quick fixes have become the go to alternatives for most of the individuals. The working parents depend on meals as such which can be managed within limited time. Thus, it can be seen that the children, in recent times, are depending on the frozen food more than ever (Ho et al. 2012). The children in recent times are more exposed to these easier alternatives. In addition to this, it can also be seen that the packaged food are more preferable to them. It is a known fact that a balanced diet is one of the basic requirements for any child. It can be said that in order to ensure that the growth process of any child is occurring in desirable manner, the required nutritional level are matched (Hurley et al. 2011). While most of the frozen foods are providing the impression of the fact that the meals which are on offer are wholesome and are capable of providing standard nutrition to the consumers which may include children, with close monitoring of the food labels it can be established that the high amount of sufficient fats are utilised and healthy high-fibre nutritional ingredients are eliminated (Kipke et al. 2014). The use of ingredients like hydrogenated oils such as palm oils are used which are hidden forms of trans-fat. Thus, on the basis of the mentioned condition, it can be said that the regular consumptions of food products as such at regular intervals can lead to considerable disturbance of imbalance of nutritional intake among children. Thus, the overall growth process can get considerably hampered (Koplan et al. 2015). In addition to this, the immunity system of the children can also suffer making them vulnerable towards other added health issues like blood pressure, heart diseases and so on. Hence, it can be seen that the contents in the frozen food can have adverse impact on the children who are regularly consuming such products. Findings and Discussions Dietary behaviour of children has been changing Nick Farrell (Facebook): I've been to Pizza Joint every day this week ..I think I have a problem. I have the dietary habits of a child Facebook user: It's a 4 month commitment to 'transition' to healthier 'habits' as this takes time... but the benefit is long term lasting results instead of the yoyo diet effect and poor health. The modern fast-paced lives have channelized the behaviour of children relating to food in a specific direction. The dependencies on fast and processed foods have increased in the recent times (Frongillo and Bernal, 2014). It can be said that the preferences and habits of the children have been driven towards these easy to make food items. The consumption of junk and fast foods have increased among the children and young adults. Hence, it can be noticed that the dietary guidelines which are needed to be consumed as per dietary guidelines (Kral et al. 2014). It can be said that the demographic and socio-cultural background of children are one of the major reasons behind the inconsistency in the dietary behaviour of children in recent times (Feld et al. 2017). The eating patterns among the children are indicators that the consumption of high energy but low nutrients foods are more persisting among the children who are growing up in urban set ups in comparison to the children in rural areas (Lenardson et al. 2015). One of the major reasons behind the same is the factor that the fresh products direct from farms and dairies can be accessed more easily by the individuals staying in rural areas (Eicher-Miller et al. 2015). The freshly acquired products when distributed to the urban areas, the process of transportation considerably reduces the nutrient values of the products (Li et al. 2012). Additionally, in order to ensure that the shelf-life of the products are increased considerable amount of processed ingredients are added as preservatives (Taillie et al. 2016). Thus, as a result, it becomes evident that the dietary behaviour of children in urban set up are influenced by certain factors like the increased time constraints and lesser access to fresh food products (McGarvey et al. 2014). Hence, their food habits are lesser effective than that of the children in the rural set up. The influence of junk food is comparatively more in urban areas as well due to the mentioned factors. Increased Consumption of Frozen food Charles Lemos (Facebook) Between 1977 and 1995, US potato consumption increased by a third, almost entirely due to the rise of frozen French Fried potatoes. With the constraints of time of people in recent times, it can be said that the individuals are searching for alternatives that will require minimum efforts from their sides. Hence, the dependency on frozen food has been increasing considerably in recent times (Morgan, 2013). The increase in competition in the various sectors around the world have led to the scarcity of time among individuals to shop and cook fresh ingredients. Hence, food with preservatives are usually availed and stored in the houses in majority of the times. The frozen food industry has gained considerable reputation among the food industry as well (Rehm and Drewnowski, 2017). It can be said that the increasing consumption of the growing population is one of the major reasons behind the growing demand of the frozen food. Furthermore, the convenience which is tagged along these kinds of food items are added advantages. It cannot be denied that when it comes to frozen food, there are varieties that are available (Nackers and Appelhans, 2013). Be it the regular fruits and vegetables, meat products and so on or the confectionaries, pizzas, burgers, snacks and other junk items, there is a large division of categories from which one may choose. Thus, it can b e said that the frozen food industry has been delivering according to the food preferences of many. The ready meals and frozen meats are high in demand due to the change in lifestyles of the individuals. It can be further said that while most of the nutritionists around the world are not advocating the added advantages of the frozen food items, the advancement in technology and implication of better techniques by the manufacturers have the tendency to make the consumers feel more inclined towards such alternatives (O'dea, 2014). On the basis of the above discussion, it can be said that the demand of frozen food is likely to increase over the years due to the significant changes in lifestyles of the potential consumers globally (Feld et al. 2017). Harmful effects of Frozen Food Police Alerts UK and News Report (Facebook page) Do you know what E621 or sodium glutamate is? Have you ever heard about this substance? Youd be surprised to find out that youre consuming it on a daily basis and its wreaking havoc on your body! Sodium glutamate E621 is a common additive found in almost all manufactured foods. Theres almost no restaurant in the world that doesnt use this taste enhancer. Its one of the most harmful substances we consume every day, without even realizing it! Even though the demands of frozen foods as such are on rise globally, the effectiveness of these products on overall health benefits still remains questionable. It is important to note that the difference of the ingredients used in making the products and the freshly cooked products are evident (Reilly et al. 2013). On the close monitoring of the products it can be seen that the contents which are incorporated in the frozen foods are far less healthier than the freshly acquired from farm counterparts. According to the explanation of nutritionists it becomes clearer that even though the products as such are adding more amount of convenience in the lives of the individuals, it cannot be denied that there are considerable adverse impacts of the same as well (Eicher-Miller et al. 2015). The main areas of the concerns arise due to the fact that the ingredients which are used may have the tendency to contain high amount of sodium and trans fat. Many meals may even contain the sodium up to 700 to 1800 mg (Rolland-Cachera et al. 2012). Thus, maintaining a balance on the overall intake can be difficult since in average people may have to take a minimum of 3 meals. The daily recommended intake of sodium which can considered to be healthy can thus be crossed with the occasional intake of frozen food by any individual on a daily basis. The impact of the frozen foods is recently being noticed by the individuals around the globe due to the increasing consciousness relating to health (Sahoo et al. 2015). The studies which have proven that the level of food intake among the individuals are less nutritive when frozen food are being consumed makes it evident that there are added health related issues that may be associated with the products as well. Frozen food and Child Obesity Tony Weekes (Youtube Video) They cover foods high in fat, meaning over processed, boxed and packaged 'foods' like cookies cakes, frozen food etc. By our children continually eating like this, we are damaging their cognitive health, affecting their behaviour, not to mention the possibility of obesity and fatty internal organs. It has been stated in previous studies that when it comes to diet of children and adolescent it becomes all the way more necessary to invest on certain products which may be helpful in maintaining a balanced diet. It is important that the nutritional values are properly addressed and monitored in order to strengthen their immunity systems and ensure their unhindered physical and mental growth (Sealy, 2010). However, according to the studies, it can be seen that the maintenance of proper balance is one of the major issues that is being faced by the children in recent times. On the basis of the observation it is noted that when it comes to physical activities, the children are comparatively lesser active from that of a regular adult in a general set up. The consumption of the frozen foods with high amount of sodium and sugar content can, thus, will have the tendency to get gathered within the body (Rehm and Drewnowski, 2017). Thus, it can be effective in ensuring that the body fat leading to conditions like obesity is prevalent. Findings from conducted studies state that the preference of children towards frozen confectionaries, junk and processed foods are also adding to the current state of growing obesity among the youngsters as well (Stice et al. 2016). It can be seen that the proportion of body fat has been increasing due to the inactivity of the children and the added stress that they have to face leading to eating disorders are also major contributors of obesity among the children in recent times. Thus, it can be said that the children are required to be monitored and restricted from consuming high amount of frozen food as the same is responsible for the growing cases of obesity along with the lesser physical activities in recent times (St-Onge et al. 2013). Hence, it can be said that in order to reduce the effectiveness of the potential issues that may rise due to the added weight that may be gained by consumption of frozen food, maintaining a balanced diet is one of the crucial steps that is needed to be considered. Obesity leads to other health issues Facebook User: Its time to get serious about our HEALTH people, Mississippi is #2 in OBESITY and it is causing to many health issues and DEATHS. Recorded studies advocate that obesity is not the only issue that may be emerging due to the consumption of frozen food. As it has been noted in the study above, when it comes to obesity, there are added health issues that are associated with the same. It can be seen that the obesity often leads to many other chronic diseases among individuals as well (Taillie et al. 2015). It can be seen that the overweight children tend to develop health issues like asthma, diabetes, heart diseases and so on. It has been noticed in recent times that one out of every three children are developing tendencies of diabetes due to the issue of obesity in recent times. As recorded in the literature review, liver problems are also closely associated with the obesity. It has been observed in various studies that the children who are obsessed have a higher risk of facing severe liver problems like steatohepatitis (NASH) (Zhou et al. 2015). Conditions as such can even lead to cirrhosis which can have considerable negative impact on the liver of any individual, especially children with weaker immunity systems. Additionally, the development of metabolic syndrome cannot be ignored as well. Resistance o insulin which may lead to diabetes is one of the major issues that obese children may have to face in recent times. The abnormal lipids can lead to other issues of digestion and other added disorders (Frongillo and Bernal, 2014). Hence, it can be said that the children are likely to get adversely affected in many ways due to the persisting among the children in recent times. It is important that the added health conditions are avoided in initial steps to ensure that the obesity may not be a chronic condition they may have to face during their adulthood as well. It is, hence, important that appropriate consideration is given towards their overall intake of food and physical activities to eliminate the issues that may crop up due to obesity. Conclusion On the basis of the above study it becomes evident that the consumption of frozen food is one of the major issues that is responsible for the rise in obesity among children and adolescent around the globe. The contents and ingredients of which the preservatives are made of certain sodium or sugar elements which are major contributor of weight gain among individuals. It can be said that the children tend to get more effected with such ingredients due to their comparatively lower physical activities and the eating disorders that is sustaining in their food and dietary habits. Additionally, the preferences of the parents and children are more inclined towards these quick fix alternatives in recent times. It can be said that more attention is needed to be provided towards the dietary habits of the children by the parents. While the loss of nutrient contents like vitamin C is imperative, it is better to opt for products which have lesser amount of confectionary products or syrups. The products with high amount of sauces and saturated fats can also be avoided to ensure that the fat intake is done in a proportionate manner. Additionally, it is important that considerable amount of physical activities are done. It will reduce the chances of the fat getting stored in body and enhance the metabolism. Hence, occasional exercises and outdoor games are required to be maintained by the children. Thus, the overall growth of the children can remain unaffected. Seamus Heaney`S Digging Essays (1380 words) - Seamus Heaney
Seamus Heaney`S Digging The Modernist theme of mechanization, brought on by the beginning of World War I and the technological revolution of the era, manifests itself powerfully and completely in the language of Seamus Heaneys first poem, Digging. From various literary devices, as well as graphic imagery the mechanization of the human spirit comes to life in the form of his father, and grandfather. The past and present become one, with the common bond the honest work of the Irish poor. In his own way, and with his own pen, Heaney develops the idea of mechanized men who, through the drudgery and repetition of their lives, create a life for them and their families, taking pride in their work, and acceptance of their fate. He develops seamlessly the idea of a man-machine, a hybrid of automation and human, married by toil and tool. Likewise, Heaney writes this as a way to tie himself to his ancestors in the British Isles, illustrating the power that they wielded with shovel and sweat, making their contribution no less enlightened than his own. In his first poem, Heaney develops the image of mechanization and automation that follows the poor of his country, through graphic imagery, sound, and literary mastery. Heaneys imagery throughout the poem echoes the automation of the workers, illustrating the type of work that they do as something that could be done by machinery. Titling the piece Digging immediately highlights for the reader the verbal connotation of the work, and puts the theme of work, and of manual labor into the limelight. As well, Heaneys use of the word gun to describe his squat pen in line 2 places the emphasis on machinery allowing a comparison of the human condition to present technology. This theme continues throughout the poem, as Heaney likens his fathers act of digging to that of a machine, as his father nestled on the lug, the shaft/Against the inside knee was levered firmly. (ll.10-11) These words take the labor out of the realm of man, by using mechanical terms to d escribe the marriage of shovel and man, creating an altogether different image of a type of robot tearing up sod. While he describes this straining rump, Heaney takes this man out of the realm of men, and into a realm of manufactured workers, a realm of repetition, a realm of stooping workers, their humanity set aside to finish the job at hand. However, while Heaney describes the toil of his father, he also ties it to the alike labor of a past generation, namely his grandfathers, used to nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods/Over his shoulder.(22-23) This juxtaposition of past and present illustrates the monotony of the work involved, and how things take time to change. Heaney creates the transition between his father and grandfather in a two-line stanza that highlights the pride of these men, and how their automation gave cause for praise from their descendant, Heaney. Their legacy of hard work, however mechanized, illustrates the value placed on labor in their society. While He aney creates the idea of men-machines through visual images and parts, he also creates a very auditory world, one that echoes the act of a factory, or a piece of farm machinery. From the first stanza, with its clean rasping sound, the readers ear can almost hear the whir of a lawn mower, or something of that nature, cutting and slicing. (3) The rhythm of Heaneys fathers digging highlights the monotony of the act, the incessant meter of his practiced spade. This coincides with the sounds in the prior stanza, as the authors first recollection is an auditory one. Later in the poem, the squelch and slap/Of soggy peat, continues the idea of a machine chugging away at the turf, creating again the essence of a machine oblivious to the conditions of the work men. (25-26) Heaneys workers are extremely vivid, both physically and mentally, even after so many years, and the trials and hardships that they endure, day in and day out, add to the essence of their existence, one that lends acceptanc e to the fact that they are somewhat more than men, that their labor, however menial, is somewhat mechanized, somewhat heroic, and

Ignorance is bliss Essays
Ignorance is bliss Essays Ignorance is bliss Essay Ignorance is bliss Essay Ignorance is certainly bliss. Oedipus had been living a lie his whole life. He was raised by people who werent even his real parents and didnt know of his origins. Maybe that was a good thing. When Oedipus invites Treaties over to talk about Alias death, Treaties refuses to tell Oedipus anything. Treaties then says This day will give you a father, and break your heart. (Sophocles, Peg. 24) Because Oedipus doesnt know anything about his true family, he curses at Treaties. Oedipus sends Treaties away in a fit of rage. Why wont Treaties tell me anything? The less Oedipus knows the better. Oedipus soon finds out the information needed to continue with the curse he put on the man who murdered King Alias. When Oedipus realized that he may have committed the very crime he is trying to solve, he says l think that I myself may be accurate by my own ignorant edict. (Peg. 40) Here, he even finds himself ignorant. Oedipus was unknowing of many things prior to this discovery; one which was who did it. Who killed Alias? When he found out it was himself it all fell into place. Oedipus killed his father and was sleeping with/had children with his mother. Ignorance was the only way for him. Ignorance was the best way. It was said that the boy would kill his own father, said the Shepherd. (Peg. 64) Here was where Oedipus knew that he was the killer of his own father and that the prophecy had come true. If Oedipus had not known about the prophecy, this wouldve never happened. He wouldve never left Corinth. He wouldve never kill King Alias. He wouldve never gone to Thebes and taken over as king. This whole book was based off f knowing too much and that is why ignorance, for Oedipus, wouldve been bliss. Ignorance is certainly bliss. When you said in class that we, as students, were in this book, didnt want to believe it. But too was ignorant. And it was bliss; at least at first. I didnt know what this book had to offer and how it relates to my life and the lives around me. It shows me that we all are Oedipus in some way. Some are leaders. Some are full of questions. And some, like me, are ignorant Though ignorance is bliss, so is knowledge. And having a little bit Of both is better.

Texas Exceptionalism - Essay Example The reason as to why they are famous for this or rather described as such is because of the following reasons. The State has the largest percentages of uninsured children, Non-Elderly insured, population with food insecurity, Teenage Birth Rate, Overall Birthrate, amount of toxic wastes released into water and air just to mention but a few (Nackman 57). The answer to the origin of this observation is not easy since more than six nations have colonized the whole State or some parts of Texas. This dates back to the 18th century when Texas was ruled by Spain. Mexico then took over Texas in 1836. Later, the Anglo settlers in Texas rebelled against the Mexican rulers and brought about their own form of civilization in Texas. This study normally aims at understanding how the ways of the early settlers in Texas have found their way into the present times without much change. The early settlers were complex, greedy, divided and racist. The people of Texas have always viewed themselves as sup erior to other people (Nackman 87). The Legal System and ADR Analysis Essay Example for Free
The Legal System and ADR Analysis Essay Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) refers to any means of settling disputes outside of the courtroom. ADR typically includes early neutral evaluation, negotiation, conciliation, mediation, and arbitration. As burgeoning court queues, rising costs of litigation, and time delays continue to plague litigants, more states have begun experimenting with ADR programs. Some of these programs are voluntary; others are mandatory. While the two most common forms of ADR are arbitration and mediation, negotiation is almost always attempted first to resolve a dispute. It is the preeminent mode of dispute resolution. Negotiation allows the parties to meet in order to settle a dispute. The main advantage of this form of dispute settlement is that it allows the parties themselves to control the process and the solution. Mediation is also an informal alternative to litigation. Mediators are individuals trained in negotiations, who bring opposing parties together and attempt to work out a settlement or agreement that both parties accept or reject. Mediation is used for a wide gamut of case-types ranging from juvenile felonies to federal government negotiations with Native American Indian tribes. Mediation has also become a significant method for resolving disputes between investors and their stock brokers. Arbitration is a simplified version of a trial involving limited discovery and simplified rules of evidence. The arbitration is headed and decided by an arbitral panel. To comprise a panel, either both sides agree on one arbitrator, or each side selects one arbitrator and the two arbitrators elect the third. Arbitration hearings usually last between a few days to aà week, and the panel only meets for a few hours per day. The panel then deliberates and issues a written decision, or arbitral award. Opinions are not public record. Arbitration has long been used in labor, construction, and securities regulation, but is now gaining popularity in other business disputes. Title 9 of the U.S. Code establishes federal law supporting arbitration. It is based on Congresss plenary power over interstate commerce. Where Title 9 applies, its terms prevail over state law. There are, however, numerous state laws on ADR. Forty-nine states have adopted the 1956 version of the Uniform Arbitration Act as state law. The act was revised in 2000 and subsequently adopted by twelve states. The arbitration agreement and award is now enforceable under both state and federal law. In 1958, the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards was drafted to aid in the enforcement in domestic courts of awards granted in foreign countries. As of August 2007, there were 142 countries participating in the convention. In 1970, the United States joined the UN Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards. The Other in William Shakespeares Othello Essay -- William Shakespear
The "Other" in William Shakespeare's Othello In several of Shakespeare's plays the writer introduces the notion of being considered an "other", and whether certain groups are "in" or "out". This theme is significantly portrayed in the play Othello, in which a black general living in Venice must constantly struggle to balance his dual nature of both Moor and Venetian. It is apparent that before the play begins, Othello has not yet resolved his duplicitous self-image; however, throughout the action of the play, he is put in a maliciously-designed situation which causes his insecurities and self doubt to breed, allowing the Venetian?s stereotype of the brutal and ignorant black man to consume Othello's eloquence and education adopted as a Christian military leader in society. Othello's fall into uncivilized madness intensifies throughout the play, but is finally resolved in his final speech in Act V, scene ii, just before he stabs himself to death: Othello reconciles both of his identities in asking that he be remembered as he is and not as what the Venetian insiders see him to be, and what he has become in the course of the play - a vile, unforgiving, savage Moor. Othello is one of Shakespeare?s prime examples of an ?other?, someone who doesn?t truly belong to society by some unfortunate inheritance of ethnicity and race, made worse by the negative stereotypes constructed by the Venetians to apply to outsiders like him. Although Othello is a gifted military hero, a ?worthy governor? (II.i.30) and a ?full soldier? (II.i.36), he is also damned by his color, his blackness. Most of the Venetian insiders, including his wife Desdemona, refer to Othello as merely ?the Moor?, and label him with such blatant insults as ?l... ...n outsider like Othello to be. So in essence, the killing spree that ensues from the above events can be blamed on the racist natures of the Venetians themselves, allowing a person such as Othello to be socially constructed according to their opinion of him as a killer and madman. How Foreign Ownership Has Affected the English Premier League
Introduction The Premier league is the top soccer division in England. It is claimed to be the richest league in the world where some of the most popular players and football teams play. Most professional sports teams that are capable of buying top football players are generally the most successful. Foreign investment in English Premier League teams has become a trend and a way of becoming rich and successful. Most of the clubs in the league are controlled by foreign investors out to make profits. Liverpool F.C was formed in 1892 by John Houlding to play at Anfield after Everton F. C vacated the field. The club is arguably the most successful club in England. It has won 18 First Division titles, 7 FA Cups, 7 League Cups, and 5 European Cups. Liverpool F. C. signed a deal with Prince Faisal Al Saud to initiate and activate an elite commercial collaboration between F6, Liverpool F. C. , and the Richard Petty Nascar Team. Factors of management that are strength to the program Collaborat ion with effective partners is a major strength in the performance of the club. These exclusive collaborations explore collaborative commercial opportunities viable to football, Nascar racing, and interactive media in the Middle East country, Saudi Arabia and the surrounding nations. The Middle East sport market has great potential of growth, as the fan base in the region is growing everyday. The deal will strive to enhance the level of football competition, sports management expertise and soccer players in the region. Among the strategic partnership, plans in mind include the creation of academies and training facilities owned and controlled by Prince Faisal's organization. The framework for collaboration in Nascar has been created to evaluate the expansion of a Nascar racing circuit and Richard Petty racing institutions in the Middle East environs. F6 is one of the leading investors in interactive sports media in Saudi Arabia and has considered this deal as a perfect opportunity to bring in local teams and athletes, and introduce new methods of management and training in sports. It will also provide employment opportunities and innovative reality media production techniques (Foster et al, 2006). Liverpool fans have greatly contributed towards the success of the club. The number of Liverpool fans has increased as a result of celebrating the clubââ¬â¢s sale to new owners and also due to the appointment of a new manager Roy Hodgson. The signing of a new player Joe Cole saw the Liverpool website break its previous record of 65 million page views to over 85 million page views. The news of Joe Cole signing raised the page view impressions to over 483,000 in just an hour. In addition, the time that the clubââ¬â¢s fan spend in the site increased from five minutes to seven minutes while the average number of page view increased from 4. 5 to 5. 95. Factors of Profitability and viabilityOne of the factors contributing to profitability and viability of Liverpool is t he use of market value approach. This approach has enabled the company to assess its market value and thus evaluate its overall performance (Foster et al, 2006). Other approaches that have also contributed to the clubs success include the Acquisition-Based valuation approach and the Sabermetrics technique. The Acquisition-Based valuation approach assists in making viable acquisition for the club while the sabermetrics is very useful in the evaluation of playersââ¬â¢ performance and the overall performance of the club (Foster et al, 2006).As a result, Liverpool F. C. debts have almost doubled to ? 86m based on the latest financial reports. The club has however recorded an increase in profits after making losses the previous year. The clubââ¬â¢s annual accounts show a pre-tax profit of ? 10. 2m in 2008, which is an increase fro the previous year in which the club made a loss of ? 21. 7m. Application of Triangulation to gain an accurate value of the club Technological development and growth has been one of the most effective ways of using triangulation to gain accurate value for Liverpool. The club launched Assigraââ¬â¢s agentless backup and recovery hardware, Televaulting that prides a back-up for data in a disc. Liverpool was in the past using legacy tape-based backup and disaster recovery (DR). The use of the new software is aimed at increasing the speed of back up and recovery and provides a guarantee 100% success rate in recovering lost data. The old system was limiting in that every time a back up of the i-series based ticketing system took place, the whole system had to be shut down. This was greatly inconveniencing because the backups were limited to once a day only. The club had to think of a way of recovering data in case it was lost in an effective manner (Turner, 2007). The new backup system now safe guard vital business data across Liverpool FCââ¬â¢s major sites: Anfield, Melwood and Academy. Changes to improve value Liverpool introduced a new approach to training in order to ascend and stay at the top of English and European football. The owners of the club have created the position of Director of football strategy in a bid to ensure that the club maintains a top position in English football.Although the Director of football strategy is the most unpopular post in English football, the new owners of Liverpool view this as the most appropriate strategy to run the club. The owners have introduced the principles of sabermetrics, which are very successful in baseball. Sabermetrics is defined as the analysis of baseball based on objective evidence, particularly baseball statistics that evaluate the in-game activity as opposed to industry activity such as attendance. It is thus a set of statistics that is used to assess the overall performance of a player or team. For instance, Top player ratings normally referred to, as Batter-Fielder/Pitcher Wins is a rating used to evaluate the value of baseball players and to facilitate the comparison of players against each other, despite playing for different teams or different positions. Value Over Replacement Player (VORP) is a metric that measures hitters contribution (offensive) and Pitchers contribution in a team compared to a fictitious average player (Turner, 2007). This measurement is used to evaluate a payerââ¬â¢s Replacement level. The use of these quantitative metrics n football has transformed Liverpool F. C. for the better. Events from 1997 to 2003 and principles of improvement Gerard Houllier, the former French national team manager, was introduced into the Liverpool management team for the 1998ââ¬â99 season to work alongside Roy Evans. Evans did not find the deal favorable to him and decided to quit in November of 1998. The club became a founder member of the G-14 group of clubs in September 2000. The organization was formed to create a united voice to air their opinions and suggestions to soccer governing bodies FIFA and UEFA.Liverpool rema ined an active member of the G-14 clubs until it was disbanded in 2008. In its place, the European Club Association was established. The 2000-01 season was one of the best Liverpoolââ¬â¢s seasons in the clubs history. The players Owen, Fowler, Gerrard and Hyypia played a role to the clubââ¬â¢s third place finish and hence a qualification to play in the champion league. The club also won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup, together with the charity shield and the European Super Cup in 2001.Liverpool finished as number two in the premier league 2001ââ¬â02 season, their best league finish since 1991, but was subjected to a embarrassing defeat in the League Cup Third Round by Grimsby Town. The Clubs manager Houllier suffered a serious heart problem, which made him inactive in the club for three months beginning from November. How sale of the club will affect the strategic direction The sale of the club by CFO will affect my strategic direction in several ways. The sale of the club might affect the value of the club depending on the effect it will have on the stakeholders of the club.If the fans are not happy with the sale, then the clubs fan-base will be affected. Fewer fans will visit the clubââ¬â¢s website leading to a fall in the clubââ¬â¢s earnings. Some investors might feel cheated and withdrawal their support for the club. This will affect the equity value of the club. The sale of the club will thus affect the overall running of the club including the approaches used by the management. Factors that would underlie the changes and research to strengthen the recommendations There are two factors that would underlie the changes in Liverpool football club. The two factors are change of the valuation approach in acquisition and accounting for player-related payments.. Acquisition-Based Valuation Approach is the best approach to consider when determining any acquisition for the club. This approach involves considering similar previous acquisitions b efore making an investment (Foster et al, 2006). Ability to account for all player-payments greatly contributes towards the appropriate management of the club. Some of the sources of player-payments include, sign-on bonus, transfer fees, and match fees. ConclusionLiverpool football club s one of the most successful clubs in English football. The club has been successful as a result of its effective management and overall business strategies. The new owners have introduced new approaches in management as well as the training of the players. One of the newly introduced approach, sabermetrics, has provided the best evaluation and assessment criteria for both the club as well as the individual performance of the players. The cub has also adopted a new method, Televaulting, for backup and data recovery. The new method ensures that vital business data is safe and secure.

A public sector enterprise may be defined as any commercial or industrial undertaking owned and managed by the government with a view to maximize social welfare and uphold the public interest.Public enterprises consist of nationalized private sector enterprises, such as, banks, Life Insurance Corporation of India and the new enterprises set up by the government such as Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), Gas Authority of India (GAIL), State Trading Corporation (STC) etc. CHARACTERISTICS OF PUBLIC ENTERPRISES Looking at the nature of the public enterprises their basic characteristics can be summarized as follows: A. State control:à The public enterprises are financed, owned and managed by the government may be a central or state governmen t.B. Rendering service:à The primary objective of the establishment of public enterprises is to serve the public at large by supplying the essential goods at a reasonable price and creating employment opportunities. C. Government Ownership and Management: The public enterprises are owned and managed by the central or state government, or by the local authority. The government may either wholly own the public enterprises or the ownership may partly be with the government and partly with the private industrialists and the public.Autonomous or semi-autonomous organization:à Public enterprise is an autonomous or semi-autonomous organization because some enterprises work under the direct control of the government and some organizations are established under statutes and companies act. A direct channel for use of Foreign money:à Sometimes the government receive foreign assistance from industrially advanced countries for the development of industries. These advances received are spent through public enterprises. K. Agent for implementing government plans:à The public enterprises run as per the whims of the government and as such the economic policies and plans of the government are implemented through public enterprises. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTOR ENTERPRISES By private sector, we mean, economic and social activities undertaken privately by a single individual or group of individuals. They prefer to do business in private sector basically to earn profit. On the other hand public sector refers to economic and social activities undertaken by public authorities. The enterprises in public sector are set up with the main aim of protecting public interest. Profit earning comes next. Besides the difference in the objective, the enterprises in both these sectors also differ in many other aspects. In this section let us know the differences between the enterprises of public sector and private sector. Basis of difference| Private sector enterprises| Public sector enterprises| Objective| Maximization of profit| Maximize social welfare and ensure alanced economic development| Ownership| Owned by individuals| Owned by Government| Management| Managed by owner and professional managers| Managed by Government| Capital| Raised by owners through loans, private sources and public issues| Raised from government funds and sometimes through public issues| Area of Operation| Operates in all areas with adequate return on investment| Operates in basic and public utility sectors| FORMS OF ORGANISATION OF PUBLIC ENTERPRISES There are three different forms of organization used for the public sector enterprises in India. These are (1) Departmental Undertaking; (2) Statutory (or Public) Corporation, and (3) Government Company. Departmental Undertaking form of organization is primarily used for provision of essential services such as railways, postal services, broadcasting etc. Such organizations function under the overall control of a ministry of the Government and are financed and controlled in the same way as any other government department. This form is considered suitable for activities where the government desires to have control over them in view of the public interest.Statutory Corporation (or public corporation) refers to a corporate body created by the Parliament or State Legislature by a special Act which defines its powers, functions and pattern of management. Statutory Corporation is also known as public corporation. Its capital is wholly provided by the government. Examples of such organizations are Life Insurance Corporation of India, State Trading Corporation etc. Government Com pany refers to the company in which 51 percent or more of the paid up capital is held by the government. It is registered under the Companies Act and is fully governed by the provisions of the Act. Most business units owned and managed by government fall in this category. DEPARTMENTAL UNDERTAKINGS Departmental undertakings are the oldest among the public enterprises. A departmental undertaking is organized, managed and financed by the Government. It is controlled by a specific department of the government. Each such department is headed by a minister. All policy matters and other important decisions are taken by the controlling ministry. The Parliament lays down the general policy for such undertakings. FEATURES OF DEPARTMENTAL UNDERTAKINGS The main features of departmental undertakings are as follows: (a) It is established by the government and its overall control rests with the minister. (b) It is a part of the government and is managed like any other government department. (c) It i s financed through government funds. (d) It is subject to budgetary, accounting and audit control. (e) Its policy is laid down by the government and it is accountable to the legislature.MERITS OF DEPARTMENTAL UNDERTAKINGS The following are the merits of departmental undertakings:- (a) Fulfillment of Social Objectives: The government has total control over these undertakings. As such it can fulfill its social and economic objectives. For example, opening of post offices in far off places, broadcasting and telecasting programmes, which may lead to the social, economic and intellectual development of the people are the social objectives that the departmental undertakings try to fulfill. b) Responsible to Legislature: Questions may be asked about the working of departmental undertaking in the parliament and the concerned minister has to satisfy the public with his replies. As such they cannot take any step, which may harm the interest of any particular group of public. These undertaking s are responsible to the public through the parliament. (c) Control Over Economic Activities: It helps the government to exercise control over the specialized economic activities and can act as instrument of making social and economic policy. d) Contribution to Government Revenue: The surplus, if any, of the departmental undertakings belong to the government. This leads to increase in government income. Similarly, if there is deficiency, it is to be met by the government. (e) Little Scope for Misuse of Funds: Since such undertakings are subject to budgetary accounting and audit control, the possibilities of misuse of their funds are considerably reduced. LIMITATIONS OF DEPARTMENTAL UNDERTAKINGS Departmental undertakings suffer from the following limitations: (a) TheInfluence of Bureaucracy: On account of government control, a departmental undertaking suffers from all the ills of bureaucratic functioning. For instance, government permission is required for each expenditure, observanc e of government decisions regarding appointment and promotion of the employees and so on. Because of these reasons important decisions get delayed, employees cannot be given instant promotion or punishment. On account of these reasons some difficulties come in the way of working of departmental undertakings. b) Excessive Parliamentary Control: On account of the Parliamentary control difficulties come in the way of day-to-day administration. This is also because questions are repeatedly asked in the parliament about the working of the undertaking. (c) Lack of Professional Expertise: The administrative officers who manage the affairs of the departmental undertakings do not generally have the business experience as well as expertise. Hence, these undertakings are not managed in a professional manner and suffer from deficiency leading to excessive drainage of public funds. d) Lack of Flexibility: Flexibility is necessary for a successful business so that the demand of the changing times may be fulfilled. But departmental undertakings lack flexibility because its policies cannot be changed instantly. (e) Inefficient Functioning: Such organizations suffer from inefficiency on account of incompetent staff and lack of adequate incentives to improve efficiency of the employees. STATUTORY CORPORATIONS The Statutory Corporation (or Public Corporation) refers to such organizations which are incorporated under the special Acts of the Parliament/State Legislative Assemblies. Its management pattern, its powers and functions, the area of activity, rules and regulations for its employees and its relationship with government departments, etc. are specified in the concerned Act. Examples of statutory corporations are State Bank of India, Life Insurance Corporation of India, Industrial Finance Corporation of India, etc. It may be noted that more than one corporation can also be established under the same Act. State Electricity Boards and State Financial Corporation fall in this ca tegory. FEATURES OF STATUTORY CORPORATIONSThe main features of Statutory Corporations are as follows: (a) It is incorporated under a special Act of Parliament or State Legislative Assembly. (b) It is an autonomous body and is free from government control in respect of its internal management. However, it is accountable to parliament and state legislature. (c) It has a separate legal existence. Its capital is wholly provided by the government. (d) It is managed by Board of Directors, which is composed of individuals who are trained and experienced in business management. The members of the board of Directors are nominated by the government. e) It is supposed to be self-sufficient in financial matters. However, in case of necessity it may take loan and/or seek assistance from the government. (f) The employees of these enterprises are recruited as per their own requirement by following the terms and conditions of recruitment decided by the Board. MERITS OF STATUTORY CORPORATIONS Statut ory Corporation as a form of organization for public enterprises has certain advantages that can be summarized as follows: (a) Expert Management: It has the advantages of both the departmental and private undertakings. These enterprises are run on business principles under the guidance of expert and experienced Directors. (b) Internal Autonomy: Government has no direct interference in the day-to-day management of these corporations. Decisions can be taken promptly without any hindrance. (c) Responsible to Parliament: Statutory organizations are responsible to Parliament. Their activities are watched by the press and the public. As such they have to maintain a high level of efficiency and accountability. (d) Flexibility: As these are independent in matters of management and finance, they enjoy adequate flexibility in their operation. This helps in ensuring good performance and operational results. (e) Promotion of National Interests: Statutory Corporations protect and promote national interests. The government is authorized to give policy directions to the statutory corporations under the provisions of the Acts governing them. (f) Easy to Raise Funds: Being government owned statutory bodies, they can easily get the required funds by issuing bonds etc. LIMITATIONS OF STATUTORY CORPORATIONS Having studied the merits of statutory corporations we may now look to its limitations also. The following limitations are observed in statutory corporations. (a) Government Interference: It is true that the greatest advantage of statutory corporation is its independence and flexibility, but it is found only on paper. In reality, there is excessive government interference in most of the matters. (b) Rigidity: The amendments to their activities and rights can be made only by the Parliament. This results in several impediments in business of the corporations to respond to the changing conditions and take bold decisions. c) Ignoring Commercial Approach: The statutory corporations us ually face little competition and lack motivation for good performance. Hence, they suffer from ignorance of commercial principles in managing their affairs. MERITS OF GOVERNMENT COMPANIES The merits of government company form of organizing a public enterprise are as follows: (a) Simple Procedure of Establishment: A government company, as compared to other public enterprises, can be easily formed as there is no need to get a bill passed by the parliament or state legislature. It can be formed simply by following the procedure laid down by the Companies Act. (b) Efficient Working on Business Lines: The government company can be run on business principles. It is fully independent in financial and administrative matters. Its Board of Directors usually consists of some professionals and independent persons of repute. (c) Efficient Management: As the Annual Report of the government company is placed before both the house of Parliament for discussion, its management is cautious in carrying out its activities and ensures efficiency in managing the business. d) Healthy Competition: These companies usually offer a healthy competition to private sector and thus, ensure availability of goods and services at reasonable prices without compromising on the quality. LIMITATIONS OF GOVERNMENT COMPANIES The government companies suffer from the following limitations: (a) Lack of Initiative: The management of government companies always have the fear of public accountability. As a result, they lack initiative in taking right decisions at the right time. Moreover, some directors may not take real interest in business for fear of public criticism. (b) Lack of Business Experience: In practice, the management of these companies is generally put into the hands of administrative service officers who often lack experience in managing the business organisation on professional lines. So, in most cases, they fail to achieve the required efficiency levels. (c) Change in Policies and Managemen t: The policies and management of these companies generally keep on changing with the change of government.Frequent change of rules, policies and procedures leads to an unhealthy situation of the business enterprises. IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC SECTOR ENTERPRISES à § Balanced Regional Development à § Boost the basic industries of an economy. à § Concentrate on public welfare activities. à § Promote exports à § Price control of essential goods à § Limit the influence of private monopoly. à § Ensure security of the country. à § Minimize the economic inequalities.

10 Popular Types Free Printable Graph Paper
10 Popular Types Free Printable Graph Paper SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Do you need to print out some graph paper for an assignment, a project, or just for fun? Are you curious about the different types and what they're used for? Then you've come to the right place to browse and print out whatever graph paper you need! What Is Graph Paper? In the most basic sense, graph paper is paper that comes pre-printed with faint lines that make up a grid. There are all different ways to accomplish this, but the most common is a grid made of squares composed of parallel horizontal and vertical lines. Youââ¬â¢re probably already familiar with ruled paper- paper that comes pre-printed with horizontal lines that you can use to write on neatly. Graph paper provides assistance in a similar way, but with a grid that anchors your work to two dimensions rather than just one. Youââ¬â¢ll most likely need graph paper for math and math-based work. For example, as a beginning student, you can use it for visual representations of numbers when learning multiplication or addition. Later in school, youââ¬â¢ll find itââ¬â¢s much easier to use grid paper to graph geometric figures on a XY-plane than blank or ruled paper. Finally, of course, any schematic, drawing, or design that needs to be to-scale and precise is easier to do on grid paper. However, you can also use graph paper for fun. It's perfect for creating complex designs for interior design, quilting, beading, embroidery, and knitting. It's also an excellent tool for games that feature maps or strategic divisions of space: for instance, most role-playing games use graph paper to show where characters are in relation to terrain, each other, and enemies. This complex textile design uses graph paper to figure out how to create a repeating pattern. Download Free Graph Paper Depending on your project, youââ¬â¢ll need a different kind of grid on your graph paper. I've created 10 printable graph paper PDFs (with alternate JPG versions) to meet your needs. Quad-Ruled Graph Paper Here are several versions of the most standard kind of graph paper- the kind that is made up of squares. Use this paper for math projects like graphing lines or functions, for science projects like creating charts of experiment results, or for developing creative symmetrical or repeating designs. ââ¦âº inch squares: JPG Version | PDF Version à ¼ inch squares (most common size): JPG version | PDF version à ½ inch squares: JPG version | PDF version Quad-Ruled Graph Paper with XY-Coordinates If youââ¬â¢re doing a lot of coordinate geometry, save yourself some time with graph paper that already has an XY-axis on it! Full-page coordinate grid: JPG version | PDF version Half-page coordinate grids: JPG version | PDF version Multi-Line Graph Paper This graph paper features a standard à ¼ inch quad grid overlaid with slightly heavier lines in intervals of 4 or 5 squares. Use it to learn skip-counting when first discovering numbers, or use it to easily create bar graphs and other kinds of visual data representation à ¼ inch minor lines, with major lines every 4 squares: JPG version | PDF version à ¼ inch minor lines, with major lines every 5 squares: JPG version | PDF version Dot Paper Dot paper is graph paper that only marks the corners of the grid squares and leaves out their sides. Use it for charts and designs, particularly if youââ¬â¢d like a less visually cluttered result. Because the paper only has dots, any lines you draw won't have to compete with the pre-printed lines that standard quad paper has. à ¼ inch spaced dots: JPG version | PDF version à ½ inch spaced dots: JPG version | PDF version Isometric (Triangle Grid) Paper In this kind of graph paper, instead of squares, the grid is made up out of equilateral triangles. Use it to create 3-dimensional drawings for designs like woodworking plans, interior space planning, or graphing on an XYZ-axis. Draw your vertical lines normally, and then draw any horizontal lines using the sides of the triangles. Because the grid creates angled cubes, your drawings are instantly in 3D. à ¼ inch isometric graph paper: JPG version | PDF version Here's a cool example of what you can do with isometric paper.(Image: tygerbaer2013 via Deviant Art) Expert Tips for Using Graph Paper in Math If you're using graph paper to learn math, let me share a few ideas for how to get the most productive use out of this tool. For Beginner Students For younger students, you can use graph paper to help with concepts like: The number line. Drawing a number line on graph paper automatically correctly spaces each segment. You can use the cross-lines to represent units, fives, tens, or hundreds. Addition and subtraction. Use different color pencils to add or remove squares from a whole. Alternatively, you can use a number line to show that addition and subtraction are ways or moving up or down on it. Multiplication and division. Use rectangular shapes to demonstrate how 3x8 yields the same result as 4x6 by graphing 3 rows of 8, then graphing 4 rows of six, and then counting the resulting squares. Fractions. Divide a rectangle into a variety of equal parts with colored pencils to show how many equal parts can make up a whole. Mapping an environment. Connect our 3D world to 2D space by making a map of the room youââ¬â¢re in, or of your street. For More Advanced Learning As you continue in school, graph paper should become one of the many tools in your problem-solving arsenal. Automatically use graph paper. Remember that you may find it easier to solve problems with graph paper even if they donââ¬â¢t explicitly say to use it. For example, many geometry problems are easier to figure out when you see them represented visually. Graph paper makes the best scratch paper. Use grid paper as your math scratch paper- it will force you to be neater and more precise when organizing proofs, reducing formulas, and so on. What's Next?
